myspace.com/neelmurgai After being a side man in such groups as Mission: on Mars and Dhafuzion for years, Neel Murgai is now presenting his own unique vision. This ensemble combines Neel’s sitar with the downtown stylings of viola player Mat Maneri, along with Sameer Gupta on tabla and Greg Heffernan on cello. This indo-chamber jazz group performs a new kind of music that combines Indian melody and rhythm, with experimental compositional techniques, orchestral textures and free improvisation. Their sound ranges from droning minimalism as Neel uses his overtone singing techniques, to intricate arrangements, mathematical rhythmic structures and ecstatic flights of fancy. Imagine Ravi Shankar meeting Bartok while listening to John Coltrane.
